Who Will Control the US Senate After the 2024 Elections?

The Republican party has taken over the US Senate, winning key races and flipping Democratic-held seats like West Virginia and Ohio in the 2024 elections. The fate of the House of Representatives remains hanging as many important electoral battles remain uncalled.

The GOP held on to states like Texas and Florida, and pushed back a surprisingly strong challenge to Sen. Deb Fischer in Nebraska from independent newcomer Dan Osborn. Overall, the party was assured of at least 51 seats. Vote counting could reportedly extend beyond Tuesday.

In Ohio, Bernie Moreno defeated three-term Democratic senator Sherrod Brown; Jim Justice won West Virginia, a seat vacated by Joe Manchin. Republican Tim Sheehy is reportedly leading in Montana. The Democrats controlled the Senate 51-49 and the Republicans needed only one seat.

Republican possibilities reportedly remain in Wisconsin, Nevada, Michigan, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Their control of the Senate is likely to make things difficult for if Kamala Harris — but only if she wins presidential race — as they will be holding both chambers in Congress.

Despite their gains, however, the GOP is reportedly unlikely to corner a 60-vote majority which is required to push most legislation in the chamber. But the shift would give them a huge fillip in Supreme Court nominations, ambassadorships, and other federal positions.

The Republicans will officially gain power in the Senate in January 2025 ahead of the presidential inauguration and — if Donald Trump wins — give the new president a tremendous kickstart. Next week, they will elect the replacement for Mitch McConnell, the outgoing Senate leader.
