England and Wales police sacked 593 officers in the year to March 2024 — a 50% rise from the 394 dismissed the year previously — over a wide range of issues, including the sharing of deeply offensive WhatsApp messages.According to the College of Policing's Police Barred List, the most common reason for dismissal — 125 cases — was dishonesty, followed by sexual offenses, and discriminatory behavior. As of last January, about 1,071 Met police officers had been under investigation for domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.
About 12.7% of the total dismissed, or 79 officers and specials (voluntary officers), were from a black or other ethnic minority, while 530 were white. It has been reported that 491 were male, while 97 were female.While expressing disappointment at officers' conduct "falling far below the standard," assistant Chief Constable Tom Harding of the College said the spike in dismissals showed that robust procedures were weeding out offenders whose behavior "tarnishes policing and erodes public trust."
