Tensions boiled over this weekend after Spain's King Felipe and Queen Letizia, alongside Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Valencia's regional governor Carlos Mazón, visited one of the worst-hit regions in the country's recent flooding.

Crowds in the town of Paiporta — where over 60 of the nation's more than 200 dead came — shouted "killers!" and "get out!" as the leaders carried out the official visit. Others hurled clots of mud and other objects, including rocks, and two bodyguards were reportedly injured.

Sánchez and Mazón were forced to seek protection and were quickly whisked away by their security details. Meanwhile, the king and queen insisted on staying and could be seen engaging with a number of residents.

The anger came after many believed that the government's response to floods that hit the Valencia region last Tuesday to be inadequate. According to reports, many people remain without drinking water while internet and mobile phone coverage remains patchy. Power was only restored on Saturday and many streets remain clogged with mud, totalled cars and debris.

Later in the day, the king said he understood the "anger and frustration" in a social media post. Meanwhile, Sánchez said he acknowledges "the anguish, suffering, uncertainty and the needs of the residents of Paiporta and the region of Valencia," and that Sunday's incident will not derail recovery efforts.
