After Sunday's Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Archbishop Roberto O. Gonzalez Nieves of San Juan, Puerto Rico, urged former President Donald Trump to personally apologize for the controversial remarks made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe.

Hinchcliffe described the US island territory as a "floating island of garbage." "I appreciate a good joke; however, humor has its limits," the Archbishop stated in a social media shared letter. "It should not insult or undermine the dignity and sacredness of people."

Hinchcliffe's comments included slurs about Black Americans, Latinos, and Jews, which many found racist and offensive. Angel CintrÃ3n, the chairman of Puerto Rico's Republican Party, stated Monday that he would not support Trump unless he apologized for his insults.

The Trump campaign promptly issued a statement distancing themselves from the comedian's comments. However, Trump himself has not yet responded. According to Danielle Alvarez, a senior Trump campaign adviser, “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign."

In Racine, Wisconsin, vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, stated that he didn't believe a comedian telling a joke was newsworthy. "You know what I do when I find a joke dumb or unfunny? I just don't laugh," he added.

An extended Puerto Rico debate could hurt Trump. Puerto Ricans, despite being American citizens, do not have the right to vote for president. But 5.8M Puerto Ricans in US states can vote. Almost 1M Puerto Ricans live in presidential swing states, and a majority tend to favor the Democratic Party.
