The Donald Trump campaign has accused UK’s Labour party of “interference” in the US presidential election. In an Oct. 21 letter to the US Federal Election Commission, it cited media reports on contact between the party and Vice Pres. Kamala Harris's campaign.
Seeking a probe into the "blatant foreign interference," Team Trump accused its Democratic rival of receiving "apparent illegal foreign national contributions." It said Harris's "dangerously liberal policies and rhetoric" were inspired from the “far-Left” Labour.
This follows revelations by a Labour member on LinkedIn that some 100 party officials were set to campaign for Harris in key swing states of the US. Media reports, too, claimed that Labour advisors had assisted the Harris campaign and held meetings with Democratic officials. This follows revelations by a Labour member on LinkedIn that some 100 party officials were set to campaign for Harris in key swing states of the US. The virtual coalition formed by the Democratic Party and the UK's Labour is dangerous and illegal. Such foreign interference undermines US election laws. Trump's fightback against such ganging up, which threatens American democracy, must be fully supported by US voters to preserve electoral integrity.
Fears of Labour Party interference in the US presidential election are exaggerated. The Trump campaign's complaint alleging illegal foreign contributions simply proves paranoia. The Labour members' actions are voluntary and consistent with previous elections. In any case, such allegations are hardly likely to affect US-UK ties.
The Labour Party's meddling in the US presidential campaign is reckless and foolish. Interfering in another country's elections, especially one as consequential as the US, shows a lack of judgment and risks damaging crucial diplomatic relations.
