A US court Wednesday sentenced Genaro Garcia Luna, former Mexico security chief who led that country's war on narcotics, to 38 years in prison for bribery.
Commensurate with the severity of his crimes, New York District Judge Brian Cogan also imposed a $2M fine on García Luna who was in office from 2006 to 2012.
The assailants left behind two posterboards with messages, one of which contained threats from the Sombra cell of Cartel Santa Rosa de Lima (CSRDL) directed at Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) and a rival commander. The former super-cop, who once reportedly led almost 40K men, was in 2023 convicted of five criminal charges, including conspiring to distribute cocaine globally.
The escalating violence in Guanajuato is a direct result of the ongoing turf war between rival cartels. CSRDL's aggressive tactics, including threats and attacks on innocent civilians, are desperate attempts to maintain control over their territory. The arrest of El Rudy is a significant blow to CSRDL's operations and may lead to further instability in the region.
The recent attacks and threats are a necessary evil in the fight against the expansion of CJNG, a notoriously violent cartel. CSRDL's actions, while extreme, are aimed at protecting their territory and the local communities from the potentially worse consequences of CJNG taking control. The arrest of El Rudy is a setback, but CSRDL will continue to defend its interests in Guanajuato.
