Cartel Violence Escalates in Guanajuato, Mexico

The Facts

  • The attack occurred in Apaseo El Alto, where gunmen stormed the Lexus gentlemen's bar, killing eight people inside and two others outside, according to state police sources.A US court Wednesday sentenced Genaro Garcia Luna, former Mexico security chief who led that country's war on narcotics, to 38 years in prison for bribery.

  • The assailants left behind two posterboards with messages, one of which contained threats from the Sombra cell of Cartel Santa Rosa de Lima (CSRDL) directed at Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) and a rival commander.Commensurate with the severity of his crimes, New York District Judge Brian Cogan also imposed a $2M fine on García Luna who was in office from 2006 to 2012.
