The new law includes rules for news media, prohibiting the publication of images of living things and ordering outlets not to mock or humiliate Islam or contradict Islamic law.

Local journalists in various provinces, including Ghazni and Maidan Wardak, have been summoned and advised to adapt their practices, such as taking photos from further away and filming fewer events.

Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, Afghanistan's media landscape has seen a significant decline, with the number of media employees dropping from 8,400 to 5,100, including only 560 women.

The photography ban is part of the Taliban's strict interpretation of Islamic law, which has also led to restrictions on women's rights, including bans on sports participation and limited access to education beyond primary school.
