Brian Stelter Will Return to CNN as Chief Media Analyst

Google New Zealand Country Director Caroline Rainsford said the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill wasn't the right approach for news' sustainable future.

She said Google would "stop linking to news content on Google Search, Google News or Discover" and end its current deals with news firms if the bill passes.

Introduced in parliament in August 2023, the bill proposes to create a bargaining process between media firms and digital platforms that use their content.

Media Minister Paul Goldsmith, who's been negotiating the bill with tech giants, earlier said it was meant to act as a backstop to protect sustainable journalism.

The bill reportedly has the near-unanimous backing of political parties and local media industry, which has seen layoffs and closures as advertising moves to digital.
