Will the Gaza War Lead to a Two-State Solution to the Israel-Palestine Conflict?

On Sunday morning, three Israeli civilian security guards were killed when a lone gunman opened fire in a commercial cargo area under Israeli control at the King Hussein (Allenby) bridge border crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan.

The IDF reported that the shooter was a 39-year-old truck driver from Jordan. The gunman was shot dead by security personnel at the scene and his truck was searched for explosives.

As per Jordan's state-run Petra News Agency the gunman was a retired Jordanian soldier from a town named Athroh, who worked as a truck driver, transporting goods to the West Bank. The initial investigation concluded the incident was an individual act, according to Jordan's interior ministry.

The Allenby Bridge, also known as the King Hussein Bridge, is the only international gateway for the 3M Palestinians from the West Bank that does not require entering Israel. Following the incident, all border crossings between Jordan and Israel closed.

Despite Jordan's peace agreement with Israel in 1994, it is highly critical of Israel's policies towards the Palestinians, given its large Palestinian population. There have been widespread demonstrations in Jordan against Israel over the conflict in Gaza.

The Gaza conflict has also increased the violence in the West Bank. Since October 7, 2023, 662 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank, while 23 Israelis, including security personnel, were killed in attacks by Palestinians.
