Is Climate Change an Existential Threat?

The states of California and Nevada have reportedly evacuated around 31K people as wildfires expanded rapidly in the two states  on Sunday amid a worsening heat wave.

California's blaze, which lit up Thursday in the city of Highland near the San Bernardino Mountains, has reportedly ravaged more than 20K acres by Sunday.

Meteorologists said the "Line Fire" conflagration's intensity “helped spawn its own thunderstorms” and lightning, stalling fire-fighting manuevres.

From 1996 to 2021, the area in northern and central California destroyed by summer wildfires has reportedly risen five times from in 24 years before that.

In Nevada, the wind-driven "Davis Fire" reportedly remained 0% contained till late Sunday evening as Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency.

Apart from California and Nevada, the National Interagency Fire Center has also reported 23 large fires in Oregon, 19 in Idaho, 13 in Montana, and five in Wyoming.
