The Chinese government has reportedly said that, in keeping in line with global trends, it is putting an end to the practice of foreigners adopting young children.
A Chinese government statement said the only exception to this policy would be if the child is a biological relative of the adoptive parents or is their stepchild.
Chinese officials reportedly informed US diplomats on Thursday that Beijing will not "process cases at any stage” other than those cases covered by the exception.
