Chinese man charged in scheme to coerce nationals to return to China

Linda Sun, the former deputy chief of staff to NY Gov. Kathy Hochul, was arrested by the FBI Tuesday for spying for China, including charges of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering.

The indictment states that Hu "received substantial economic and other benefits from representatives" of the Chinese government (PRC), including "millions of dollars in transactions for the PRC-based business activities of...Chris Hu."

Among the favors she allegedly did for China included "blocking representatives of the Taiwanese government from having access to" the governor's office, where she spent 15 months as deputy chief of staff following years at other state agencies.

The indictment further alleges that she issued unauthorized invitations to Chinese officials to visit the US and meet with New York officials, and orchestrated unauthorized state proclamations — bearing the governor's signature — for Chinese officials.

According to an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent based in New York, Hu's undisclosed million-dollar business deals in China allowed the couple to buy a $4M home in New York, 2.1M condo in Hawaii, and a 2024 Ferrari sports car.

In response, Gov. Hochul's office stated that they "terminated" Sun's "employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct," as well as "reported her actions to law enforcement and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process."

This is only the latest Democrat to have been close to a Chinese spy. Before this, former Sen. Diane Feinstein's driver turned out to be a spy; then Congressman Eric Swalwell was in a romantic relationship with a Chinese spy; and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has spoken at Chinese Communist Party-linked events. There seems to be a trend in the Democratic Party.
