The Facts

  • Minnesota Governor and Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has accepted CBS News' invitation to debate Republican Party counterpart Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), writing on X "see you on October 1, JD."Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has accepted CBS News' invitation to debate his Republican counterpart JD Vance. He posted on X: "See you on October 1, JD."

  • CBS News announced the same day that they had offered both Gov. Walz and Sen. Vance four potential dates (Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, Oct. 8), and "look[ed] forward to their responses."CBS News had offered both, Minnesota Governor Walz and Senator Vance (R-OH), four potential dates (Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8) for the debate.

The Spin

Despite Fox News' best attempts on Wednesday to get an outright answer from Vance, the Republican VP nominee has so far refused to confirm his attendance on Oct. 1. Despite Walz's agreement, for now, there is no guarantee that anything will come of CBS's debate offer.

Vance is ready for a debate as long as the conditions are properly examined. While Democrats have shown their intent to only debate after early voting has already begun, Vance is instead focused on ensuring that CBS does not attempt to skew the odds in Waltz's favor.
