Will Iran Attack Israel?

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran, the Palestinian militant group claimed in a statement on Wednesday. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran's new president Masoud Pezeshkian.

Hamas' political leader was reportedly killed along with one of his bodyguards when an "airborne guided projectile" hit a residence for military veterans in the north of Tehran in which he was staying. Israel did not commented on Haniyeh’s death.

Hamas said Haniyeh - living in exile - was killed in what it called a "treacherous Zionist" attack, with Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) confirming that the Hamas leader was killed in the Iranian capital, without giving further details.

According to senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri, Haniyeh's assassination marks "a grave escalation that aims to break the will of Hamas." He added that the militant Palestinian group will not back down and remains "confident of victory."

When asked by reporters, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin did not comment on whether Israel notified Washington of the attack, adding that the US will do everything it can to prevent "things from turning into a broader conflict throughout the region."

Haniyeh's death comes after Israel reportedly killed senior Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in an airstrike in Lebanon's capital Beirut on Tuesday. Tel Aviv claims Haniyeh was behind a deadly rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
