Will There Be an Israel-Hezbollah War?

A missile attack on a soccer field in the Golan Heights on Saturday killed at least 12 children and teens, raising worries about a widened regional conflict. Israel and the US blamed Hezbollah for the strike, prompting the US to talk to Israel and Lebanon to deescalate the situation.

Israeli Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that Saturday's attack was the most severe against Israel since Hamas' attack on October 7. The attack left twenty others injured. In response, the Israeli military launched attacks on Hezbollah targets "deep inside Lebanese territory."

Hezbollah said it had fired rockets against Israeli military installations in the Golan Heights but denied involvement in the soccer field attack. Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib stated in an interview with the BBC that the incident could be a mistake by either the Israelis or Hezbollah and urged both sides to show restraint.

During a Sunday visit to the Majdal Shams soccer field, Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi said Israel knew the missile's launch location and had studied the rocket parts, proving it was a 53-kilo Hezbollah Falaq rocket. He said "Anyone who fires such a rocket into a populated area aims to kill civilians, to kill children."

In Lebanon, people fear that Israeli reprisals will be severe. France, Norway, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately. Sources report that Hezbollah has evacuated strategic locations in southern Lebanon and the eastern Bekaa Valley, expecting an imminent attack. 

The United Nations denounced the deliberate attack on civilians and advocated for their safeguarding under all circumstances. Following the 1967 war, Israel occupied the Golan Heights and despite the condemneation by the UN Security Council annexed them in 1981. The world still view the Golan Heights as part of Syrian territory.

The barbaric attack on innocent Israeli youth on a soccer field on Saturday will not go unpunished. Despite its ludicrous claims, Iran's proxy in the region, Hezbollah, is plainly responsible. They fired the rocket, and they will face the full consequences of their actions. There is a big price to pay.

Unlike Israel, Hezbollah does not target civilians. Hezbollah only hits Israeli military targets in the occupied Golan Heights. What struck the football pitch on Saturday was most likely an Israeli anti-rocket interceptor projectile. Clearly, Israel is trying to deflect attention from the over 39K Palestinians murdered in the Gaza Strip.
