The alleged leader of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada García and the son of his jailed ex-partner, Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, were arrested by US federal agents on Thursday on US soil.

Zambada and Guzmán López are facing multiple charges in the US for allegedly running the cartel's criminal operations, "including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

The two suspected drug lords got arrested by FBI agents in El Paso, Texas after reportedly boarding a plane to inspect an estate in Mexico. At least one of the men is said to have been unaware that they were on their way to the US.

US federal prosecutors charged Zambada Garcia in February with conspiracy to produce and distribute fentanyl, the leading cause of death among Americans between the ages of 18 and 45, according to US authorities.

According to the DEA, Zambada García co-founded the Sinaloa cartel together with "El Chapo" and was a co-head of the criminal organization for 30 years, controlling one of the four factions making up the cartel.

Guzmán López is one of El Chapo's four sons who took over control of their father's Sinaloa cartel section. The Sinaloa cartel is one of the two most powerful Mexican criminal organizations and traffics drugs to more than 50 countries globally.
