Will Biden Be Replaced as the Democratic Nominee?

Pres. Joe Biden in a speech delivered from the Oval Office on Wednesday explained why Sunday he decided to no longer seek reelection by saying it's time to "pass the torch" to a new generation of Democratic leaders who can help defend democracy.

Biden used swaths of the 11-minute speech to laud his first-term accomplishments, look ahead to accomplishments he hopes he'll enjoy in his final months in office, and to further endorse VP Kamala Harris, who is the favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination to oppose Republican former Pres. Donald Trump this November.

Without naming Trump, Biden concluded his remarks by saying, "The great thing about America is, here, kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands, the idea of America lies in your hands."

Biden, 81, didn't mention the political atmosphere that caused him to step aside, as he had been pressured to step aside by party leaders and sour polling since his subpar debate performance last month.

Trump reacted to the speech by writing the president "was barely understandable, and sooo bad!" on social media. At a rally earlier Wednesday, Trump called Harris a "radical left lunatic who will destroy" the US.
