Pilots mistakenly cut power leading to Nepal plane crash that killed 72 people – report

A passenger plane crashed and caught fire shortly after taking off from the Nepali capital of Kathmandu on Wednesday, killing 18 people, local officials said.

"Only the captain was rescued alive and is receiving treatment at a hospital," said a spokesman for Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport.

The plane, operated by Nepal's Saurya Airlines, had been carrying two crew members and 17 technicians, officials added, stating that it was headed for Pokhara airport for regular maintenance.

A statement from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said: "Shortly after takeoff from runway two, the aircraft veered off to the right and crashed on the east side of the runway. Rescue operations were initiated immediately."

The statement added that of those on board, 18 were Nepali while one person was from Yemen.
