Who Will Control the Gaza Strip After the Israel-Gaza War?

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday, as part of his weeklong visit to the US aimed at reinforcing American support for Israel's continued military offensive against Hamas.

Netanyahu emphasized the Israeli military's resolve to winning the conflict, saying the country will continue to wage war in Gaza "until we destroy Hamas’ military capabilities and its rule in Gaza and bring all our hostages home." He continued on to call on American lawmakers to fast track military aid to Israel, saying that it would "dramatically expedite an end to the war." Netanyahu also dismissed accusations of genocide as "outrageous slander."

During his speech Netanyahu made several references to President Franklin D. Roosevelt "Day of Infamy" speech after the attack on Pearl Harbor, comparing the October 7 terror attack in Israel that killed 1,200 people and resulted in more than 200 hostages being taken into Gaza, to both the 9/11 terror attacks and to the Pearl Harbor attack.

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers boycotted the address. Vice President Harris, who would typically preside over this kind of event was not present, citing a scheduling conflict. However, she is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu later this week at the White House.

Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden on Thursday after the president has recovered from Covid. He is also scheduled to meet with Former President Donald Trump on Friday, at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

A number of advocacy groups held protests against Netanyahu's visit to Washington DC, with the groups demanding the Prime Minister's arrest and denouncing U.S. military funding to Israel.  One such protest, which took place outside the US Capitol, drew large crowds and was met with opposition from Capitol Police who deployed pepper spray against the demonstrators.
