In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Tesla founder Elon Musk said the electric automaker will be producing humanoid robots for internal use next year, adding that Tesla will "hopefully" be able to sell them to other companies by 2026.

The robot, known as Optimus, was first demonstrated publicly in 2022 and was able to walk on stage. It weighs 56 kilograms (123 pounds) and is 170 centimeters tall (5-foot-7).

Musk previously had said the robots will cost around $20K when they enter mass production. Tesla will be competing with other humanoid robot manufacturers, including Boston Dynamics and Honda.

Humanoid robots could perform repetitive, tedious, and dangerous tasks, and help mitigate labor shortages. A declining demand for electric vehicles (EVs) — sales of which make up 80% of the firm's revenue — has caused Musk to diversify into sectors like robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).

Musk previously had said the human-like robots would be ready for internal use by the end of 2022. Musk also estimated in 2019 that self-driving taxis would be on the road by 2020. Tesla planned to unveil them this August, but there are currently design changes in progress.

Tesla will unveil its second-quarter earnings after the market closes Tuesday, with analysts expecting the earnings to decline with a slight increase in revenue. Tesla stock has surged 25% in July on the heels of positive EV delivery numbers.
