The Facts

  • The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a non-binding opinion on Friday stating that Israel's presence in the occupied Palestinian territories — referring to the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza — was "unlawful" and called for it to end.

  • The ICJ said Israel should cease all new settlement activities and withdraw settlers from the West Bank and East Jerusalem, adding that Israel systematically discriminated against Palestinians and branded its policies in the occupied territories as "de facto annexation."

  • Responding to the ruling, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "The Jewish people are not occupiers in their own land," referring to Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, calling it an "absurd opinion."
