Former Pres. Donald Trump's running mate, US Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, Wednesday addressed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, making the argument that as vice president he would fight for "forgotten communities" in Rust Belt states and draw on his experience growing up poor in Ohio and Kentucky.

Vance, 39, recapped his path from his rural upbringing to his time in the US Marines, at Yale Law School, and eventually the Senate. He also accused "America's ruling class" of destroying rural communities with trade agreements and foreign wars.

In reference to last weekend's attempt on Trump's life, Vance recounted how the former president pumped his first in the air and chanted "fight" to the crowd after being shot. Vance said that act showed how "even in his most perilous moment we were on [Trump's] mind."

Vance's speech concluded the third day of the convention, which ends Thursday. The day's theme was "Make America Strong Once Again," and more than 30 speakers — including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, who was a finalist for the VP slot, and Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. — focused their words on foreign policy, the Southern border, and national security.
