Will Biden Be Replaced as the Democratic Nominee?

As the White House announced that US Pres. Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 and was retreating to his Delaware home to isolate late on Wednesday, multiple reports suggested he was being "receptive" to calls for him to step away from his re-election campaign.

The development came after ABC News' Jonathan Karl reported on air that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) "forcefully" made the case to Biden that it would be better for him, the Democratic Party and the country "if he were to bow out" during a one-to-one meeting on Saturday.

Further reports in ABC News and CNN stated that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also had similar discussions with Biden in recent days.

One report in NBC News said that Biden spent more than a week in meetings and calls with donors and other top Democrats to address concerns about his acuity.

According to the report, Biden handled those concerns well and congenially at first, but soon had enough and became irritated that his message wasn't being heard — that he wasn't going anywhere.

However, sources who have since spoken to CNN and the New York Times said that Biden has now been "willing to listen" and "more receptive" to calls for him to step aside. According to the Times, Biden asked aides about Vice Pres. Kamala Harris' chances of winning.
