The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that China decided to suspend a new round of negotiations with the US on arms control and nuclear proliferation in protest over Washington's arms sales to self-ruled Taiwan.

According to Beijing, recent and repeated US weapons sales to the island China considers part of its territory are seriously undermining „the political atmosphere for continuing the arms-control consultations.“

The Foreign Ministry further argued that continued US arms sales to Taiwan and a series of "negative" actions by the US - Taiwan's main ally and biggest arms supplier - seriously harm "China's core interests and undermine mutual political trust."

While China claimed that the responsibility for its decision "lies fully with the US,” Washington described Beijing's decision, which analysts say could potentially represent a serious setback for global arms control efforts, as "unfortunate."

The US State Department accused China of "following Russia's lead" by making arms control talks contingent on other bilateral conflicts. It added that Beijing's actions "undermine strategic stability" and "increase the risk of an arms race."

US-China nuclear weapons talks resumed in November, with official arms control talks reportedly not expected any time soon. It is estimated, that China will hold more than 1K nuclear warheads by 2030, while the US maintains an arsenal of about 3.7K.

China's decision is a significant blow to global arms control efforts that unnecessarily jeopardizes international stability and thus China's long-term security. It's bizarre that the US warns of China's expanding nuclear stockpile and a new arms race when it possesses many times more nuclear warheads. Moreover, Washington is not defending democracy but using Taiwan as a bridgehead against a rising China, with NATO now aiming to become a nuclear alliance. China is not a threat to the world, but the world's biggest war machine.
