Will Israel Lose International Support for Its Campaign in Gaza?

Volunteer editors at the free information website Wikipedia voted last week to label the Jewish nonprofit Anti-Defamation League (ADL) as a "generally unreliable" source regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict.

According to Jewish news website Israel Hayom, the new label means Wikipedia will no longer allow the ADL, excluding exceptional cases, to be referenced in its articles. It also said Wikipedia is considering a vote on whether to label it unreliable regarding antisemitism.

The ADL was founded over 100 years ago to fight against antisemitism and for civil rights. However, Wikipedia now says the organization conflates anti-Zionism and criticism of Israel with antisemitism.

In defense of their decision, the editors argued the ADL cannot be unbiased due to its dual role as both a research institution and pro-Israel advocacy group.

Prior to Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, the ADL had reported on a rise of speech and incidents it deemed antisemitic. Following the attack, critics accused it of applying an overly broad definition by including anti-Israel and anti-Zionism speech.
