Malaysia PM says his country keeps good ties with US but not China phobia, wants to engage both

Malaysia will soon start the formal process to join the the BRICS group of emerging economies, the country's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told Chinese media on Monday.

In an interview with the Chinese media outlet Guancha, Anwar reportedly said that the decision to join the BRICS had already been made and that Kuala Lumpur was now "waiting for the final results from the government in South Africa."

Anwar pointed to Malaysia's strategic importance due to its location on the Strait of Malacca, a major shipping route, and argued that "the world is no longer unipolar" and that BRICS and China's rise might stabilize global relations.

The Malaysian leader praised China's President Xi Jinping as "one of the few outstanding leaders" and also echoed comments made by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, criticizing the US dollar's dominance in global trade.

The BRICS alliance, originally consisting of Brazil, Russia, India and China, was founded in 2009, with South Africa joining in 2010. In January this year, the intergovernmental organization expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE.

Anwar's remarks came ahead of a three-day visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Malaysia this week, with both sides expected to sign the second cycle of the bilateral Five-Year Programme for Economic and Trade Cooperation.
