Contrary to popular belief, the world has become increasingly violent, with Africa accounting for the vast majority of the global conflicts. Despite numerous "hidden" conflicts occurring worldwide, the media primarily focuses on Ukraine and Gaza. The last three years have seen record numberdsnumbers of conflicts and deaths than at any time the previous 30 years. Becauseand so many non-state actors are involved in these conflicts, it is becoming increasingly difficult for NGOs and international organizations to providprovide support to the people in need.
At the same time as thethis Norwegian report showing that the world has become a more violent place, another report, the Global Peace Index 2024, was released on Tuesday, listingshowing thethat world's most peaceful countries. Iceland, Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Singapore are the top places to go if you want to avoid war. The world economic impact of war and conflict was $19.1T last year, while only $49.6B was spent on peacebuilding and peacekeeping, representing less than 0.6% of total military spending. The same report shows that, for most people, war and conflict are bad for business. Meanwhile, arms manufacturers are making a killing. The world isn't doing enough to bring about peace.
