Who Will Control the Gaza Strip After the Israel-Gaza War?

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution endorsing a US-backed ceasefire proposal that aims to end the eight-month Israel-Hamas war.

The resolution calls for an initial six-week ceasefire and the exchange of some Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners. The three-phase proposal was announced by US President Joe Biden last month and accepted by Israel, the US said.

In the second phase, the ceasefire is supposed to be extended to a permanent end to the armed conflict and the release of all hostages in further negotiations, while the third phase envisages extensive reconstruction measures.

Adopted with 14 of the 15 Security Council members voting in favor and Russia - which has veto power - abstaining, the resolution calls on Israel and the Palestinian militant group to "implement the terms of the resolution immediately and unconditionally."

While Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad leaders expressed caution about the proposal on Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said it underscored the importance of ongoing Egypt, Qatar and US efforts for a comprehensive ceasefire deal.

In a statement on Tuesday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the UNSC vote as a "step in the right direction" to end what he characterized as Israel's "war of genocide" against the Palestinians in Gaza.
