The Facts

  • The prosecution and defense in the alleged illegal gun possession trial of Hunter Biden, US Pres. Joe Biden's son, provided closing arguments to the jury Monday. In attendance were First Lady Jill Biden, Hunter's wife Melissa Cohen-Biden, and Hunter's sister Ashley Biden.

  • Hunter is charged with lying about being addicted to drugs on a federal firearm form when purchasing a gun in 2018. While the prosecution has shown examples of Hunter's past drug use, the defense on Monday argued that past behavior doesn't mean it occurred at the time of the purchase.

The Spin

Hunter Biden's life is tragic and he's clearly made poor choices in the past, but that doesn't mean he's guilty of these specific charges. Not only did Biden believe in his own sobriety, but his daughter has been quoted as saying she personally saw the progress being made at the time. Hunter was right not to testify and allow prosecutors to play gotcha with him, so now it's up to the jury to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Hunter's entire defense is begging the jury not to believe their own eyes. Not only did his ex-girlfriends all testify that he was using drugs during this time period, but his lawyers' proposed addiction expert was dismissed by the judge for offering no sound opinions. Hunter is on the record doing and talking about doing drugs at the time he bought the gun. The public knows it, his family knows it, and the jury knows it.

Anyone who believes in the constitutional right to bear arms, whether they like the president or not, should be rooting for Hunter Biden. When America was founded, both alcohol and opium were known substances, yet no laws prohibited users of those substances from possessing guns. If the justice system can violate the gun rights of the president's son, what do you think they'd be willing to do to an average citizen?
