US removes Cuba from list of countries not fully cooperating on counterterrorism efforts

A group of Russian naval ships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, will visit Cuba next week Cuba’s Defense Ministry said in a statement, amid rising tensions with the US over the war in Ukraine.

The nuclear-powered submarine Kazan and three other Russian vessels - none of them equipped with nuclear weapons - will visit the port of Havana between June 12 and 17, according to the statement released by the Foreign Ministry.

The ministry said the deployment „corresponds to the historical friendly relations“ between Cuba and Russia „and strictly adheres to the international regulations“, adding that the stopover does not represent regional threat.

According to an unnamed senior US official, the exercises near the US coast are “part of Russia's regular military exercises” and Washington does not consider the maneuvers involving some ships and aircraft to a threat to the US.

The announcement comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Moscow may take global “asymmetric steps” in reaction to Washington's decision to authorize limited Ukrainian strikes inside Russia with US-supplied weapons.

Along with the nuclear submarine Kazan, the frigate Gorshkov, the fleet oil tanker Pashin and the salvage tug Nikolay Chiker will take part in the drills. At their closest point, Cuba and the US are just 145 km (90 miles) apart.
