The MP informed the BBC on Wednesday that while the suspension had been lifted, she had been barred from standing in the election, adding that she was "very dismayed." Abbot has represented Labour in parliament since 1987.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has in contrast stated that "no decision has been taken" to stop Abbott from running as a candidate, and confirmed that she had been restored as a member of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP).

Speaking later in the day, Starmer said it was untrue that Labour made a decision to bar Abbott, but said that national executive committee is yet to select a candidate to represent Labour in Abbott's riding.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) is described by Labour as having the "primary purpose" of providing "strategic direction for the Party". There are 41 committee members, including Starmer and Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner MP.

Abbott, on the Labour party's left-wing, received support from other MPs. Former party leader and Abbott ally, Jeremy Corbyn, was barred from running for reelection after saying that antisemitism in Labour was "dramatically overstated."

Sources for the Guardian newspaper indicate that Abbott was willing to step down and make a "dignified exit" from politics after her suspension was lifted. At a rally today, Abbott says she wants to stay an MP "as long as it is possible."

Labour's treatment of one of the country's most important trailblazers has been disgraceful, as Starmer works to stamp out any left-wing opposition to his centrist policies. While Labour is almost certain to win the next election, they will have done so by trampling on the work of their most loyal and popular figures. Starmer's treatment of Abbott is downright disgraceful.

Diane Abbott lived by the progressive, woke sword, and now her political career will die by it. Abbott  endorsed the odious racial hierarchies of oppression so dear to the left and told the world that Jews don't rank highly enough on it to be truly discriminated against. Her comments were antisemitic and wrong, and Labour is right to begin purging the endemic antisemitsm that festers in their midst.

Starmer continues works to stamp out any left-wing opposition to his centrist machine. While Labour is almost certain to win the election, they will have done at the cost of burying one of the party's must iconic and important figures. The party's behaviour towards Abbott is downright disgraceful.

Diane Abbott's political decline is the product of her own doing. Hypocritically renowned for standing up on behalf of minorities, the MP's outrageous antisemitism cannot be simply forgotten. Labour is right to purge the endemic hatred festering within its party.
