Burkina Faso's military junta has extended its rule for another five years, just as its initial 21-month deadline to restore civilian rule was due to expire on July 1.

This comes as a result of a new charter agreed on Saturday during a national consultations gathering civil society representatives and lawmakers, as well as the security and defense forces — but which most political parties boycotted.

Traoré came to power two years ago. This extension is the result of a charter signed this weekend, which extended the length of the transition to civilian government and changed how seats in the transitional assembly are assigned.

Under the new agreement, elections can be held before July 2, 2029, if the security situation so allows, with military leader Ibrahim Traoré being able to run for office.

The Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration's (PMSR) coup in 2022 was motivated by the challenges posed by Islamist militant groups affiliated with Isis and al-Qaeda, who control around half of the country's territory.
