Traoré came to power two years ago. This extension is the result of a charter signed this weekend, which extended the length of the transition to civilian government and changed how seats in the transitional assembly are assigned.

This comes as a result of a new charter agreed on Saturday during a national consultations gathering civil society representatives and lawmakers, as well as the security and defense forces — but which most political parties boycotted.

The charter stipulates that elections can occur before the deadline of 60 months after July 2, 2024 and that Traoré can run for reelection if he so chooses. Most political parties boycotted the charter talks.
