Burkina Faso's leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has announced that the incumbent military government will extend its rule for another five years. Traoré had previously pledged to restore civilian government July 1 of this year.

Traoré came to power two years ago. This extension is the result of a charter signed this weekend, which extended the length of the transition to civilian government and changed how seats in the transitional assembly are assigned.

The charter stipulates that elections can occur before the deadline of 60 months after July 2, 2024 and that Traoré can run for reelection if he so chooses. Most political parties boycotted the charter talks.

The Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration's (PMSR) coup in 2022 was motivated by the challenges posed by Islamist militant groups affiliated with Isis and al-Qaeda, who control around half of the country's territory.

Under the charter, assembly seats for the traditional political parties will not be assigned via quota. Instead, deputies will be selected based on their "patriotism."

Security challenges in the Sahel region have to led to Mali and Chad undergoing coups of their own since 2020, with the Economic Community of West African States attempting to restore democracy to the three junta-led countries.
