Ireland, Spain, and Norway on Wednesday announced their decision to formally recognize a Palestinian state, arguing that a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine is vital for peace and security in the Middle East.

In a coordinated move, Ireland, Spain, and Norway on Wednesday announced their decision to formally recognize a Palestinian state. The historic move, condemned by Israel, is reportedly set to take effect in all three countries on May 28.

At a press conference in Dublin, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris called the decision an "important and historic day for Ireland and for Palestine" and expressed confidence that other countries would follow suit in the coming weeks.

Harris noted that the decision was based on the "principle of equality" as the basis for "justice and peaceful coexistence," adding that both Israel and the Palestinians had the right to "peaceful self-determination."

Harris noted that his country's move was coordinated with Spain and Norway and that the three governments will now take the required national steps to implement their decision to recognize a Palestinian state.

Harris noted that the decision was based on the "principle of equality" as the basis for "justice and peaceful coexistence", adding that both Israel and the Palestinians had the right to "peaceful self-determination."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the decision intends to give Palestinians "hope and dignity" and aims for "peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine." Spain is set to officially recognize Palestine on 28 May.
