While driving to the PGA golf championship Friday morning, World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville, Ky., police on charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals.

Scheffler at the time in traffic that was being rerouted due to a fatal bus accident earlier in the day. Police said Scheffler ignored an officer's orders and swerved into opposing traffic to get to the golf course, "dragging [the officer] to the ground."

Scheffler has since stated that he "proceed[ed] as directed" and that it was a "very chaotic situation... considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier." He claimed it was a "misunderstanding of what [he] thought [he] was being asked to do."

Scheffler's attorney also claimed that "one police officer directed Scheffler to go around and into the facility, but the arresting officer was unaware and stopped the golfer."

An reporter who witnessed the incident said the arresting officer pulled Scheffler out of his car and handcuffed him. Scheffler asked the reporter if he could "help" him, to which the officer told the journalist, "Right now, he's going to jail, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Scheffler, who won the Masters tournament in Georgia last month, began the PGA Championship Thursday four under par, and was heavily favored to win.
