Kim Ki Nam, North Korea's (DPRK) former chief propagandist, has reportedly died at the age of 94 due to old age and "multiple organ dysfunction" he'd been treated for since 2022. Despite the same last name, he is not a member of the Kim dynasty family.

Kim, who was appointed deputy head of propaganda in 1966 before taking the lead role in 1985, was part of a core group of loyal regime supporters who helped maintain the three-generations of the dynasty since its inception in 1945.

After becoming the head of the state newspaper Rodong Sinmun, he was later put in charge of leading the succession of leadership to former premier Kim Jon Il, with whom he was reportedly a "drinking" buddy.

Kim, who was compared to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, was one of seven officials to accompany Kim Jon Un in the hearse for Jong Il's funeral in 2011. He also attended the funeral of former South Korean Pres. Kim Dae-jung in 2009.

His death is not expected to change the regime's propaganda style, given that Kim is believed to have retired around 2018 despite holding other positions such as on the State Affairs Commission.

It's also been reported that Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, took over as chief propagandists beginning in the late 2010s.
