The UK parliament on Monday finally approved a controversial deportation bill that will allow the government to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, with the law expected to come into force within days.
After legislators in the House of Commons already rejected two amendments proposed by the House of Lords last week, the bill cleared the final hurdle when the Lords finally decided not to table any further amendments.
The passing of this landmark legislation is a relief for Britons and signals the start of a fundamental shift in dealing with global migration. The Rwanda Plan will deter vulnerable migrants from making dangerous crossings and crush the business model of criminal trafficking gangs. This is why the UK has made every preparation to start deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda on time. After a long battle, the Sunak government has prevailed and this victory will protect lives and make Britain safer.
It is true that urgent action needs to be taken to stop criminal traffickers and strengthen the UK's borders, but the Rwanda plan is certainly not the way to achieve this goal. Not only is the plan extraordinarily costly, but it only covers 1% of people arriving in the UK, with no plan in place for the other 99%. Meanwhile, returns dropped by almost 50% since the Conservatives took office. Britain needs a serious migration policy, but the Rwanda plan is proof of the Sunak government's utter failure.
