Here's What Happened When Google Employees Staged an Anti-Israel Protest in Their Boss' Office

Google has fired 28 employees who participated in protests against the company's $1.2 billion contract with the Israeli government and military to provide cloud and AI services.

The protests, organized by the group No Tech for Apartheid, took place on Tuesday at Google offices in New York City, Seattle, and Sunnyvale, California, with protestors demanding the company to drop its contract with the Israeli government. Nine people were arrested during the protests on Tuesday.

The contract facing condemnation from protestors, Project Nimbus, is a $1.2 billion contract between Google, Amazon, and the Israeli government to provide artificial intelligence services and cloud infrastructure. Protestors accuse the company of supporting Israeli military action and alleged human rights violations in Gaza through building custom tools and "doubling down" on support for the country since the start of the war in October.

In a memo sent to all Google employees on Wednesday, the company's head of security, Chris Rackow, criticized the protests and warned that the company would take action against those who violate its policies, saying "we will continue to apply our longstanding policies to take action against disruptive behavior — up to and including termination."
