Mary Bonauto

Mary Bonauto is a celebrated American civil rights attorney who, as the longtime Director of the Civil Rights Project at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), played a pivotal role in achieving marriage equality—she was lead counsel in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, which legalized same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, and successfully argued on behalf of plaintiffs in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision affirming nationwide marriage equality.
