The Facts

  • US presidential primary elections took place in Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Carolina on Tuesday, with some of the races selecting battleground contenders despite relatively low voter turnout.

  • A special election in Ohio's 6th Congressional District resulted in a narrow victory for GOP state Sen. Michael Rulli over Democratic candidate Michael Kripchak, with Rulli winning by 9.3 percentage points.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Trump-backed candidates winning their primary elections in four states symbolizes his lasting influence across the GOP. It's clear that on national security, Ukraine, abortion, and immigration, congressional Republicans and 2024 candidates follow their leader.

Democratic narrative

Not all Republicans were victorious on Tuesday. McCarthy's revenge efforts against dissenters within the GOP were largely unsuccessful despite substantial funding and campaigning. These fissures show that the GOP doesn't have a united front coming into the general elections.
